A seasoned, passionate nonprofit professional with an appetite for challenge and the possibility of transformation, Ivy Barsky is fluent in every area of nonprofit management and leadership, a strategic and fearless fundraiser, adept at working across disciplines with a broad variety of constituents and stakeholders. Her consultancy helps nonprofit organizations fulfill their missions through these complicated times, while paving the way to realize their visions. And yes, to make a dent in the universe.

Barsky recently completed her term (extended twice) as interim executive director, hired to prepare to open and launch the new Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC, which she did in 2023. In addition to completing the capital project, she built and strengthened staff, grew and professionalized operations, created and implemented a strategic development plan, and spearheaded the creation of innovative exhibitions and programming

As CEO and Director of the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia, Barsky led the effort that raised $45 million during her tenure, established a nationally recognized and funded special exhibition and education program, and garnered major press attention.

Barsky was Deputy Director of New York’s Museum of Jewish Heritage—A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, where she led the planning and construction of the 82,000 sf Robert M. Morgenthau Wing, selection and installation of Andy Goldsworthy’s monumental Garden of Stones (2004), and production of numerous award-winning special exhibitions and public programs.

An experienced leader through crisis, Barsky has deftly guided her institutions through 9/11 and its aftermath, and financial and other restructuring--with a steady hand, integrity, and bold leadership.

Barsky’s early career and education were focused on art, with education and curatorial experience at PS 1, New York; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She was an adjunct professor in NYU’s Museum Studies Program. Barsky has an M.A. (and work toward a PhD) in the history of art from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. from New York University.

Barsky serves on the Board of Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE), and served on the boards of Pennsylvania Humanities Council, Auschwitz Jewish Center, the Philanthropy committee of Congregation Rodeph Shalom, Philadelphia, and was a devoted volunteer at Broad Street Ministry--which practices radical hospitality for those who are experiencing homelessness. She is a graduate of LEADERSHIP Philadelphia's executive program.

Barsky is an arts and culture hound, avid reader, and an eclectic music fan. A licensed mixologist, she is impressive on either side of the bar. She has a reputation for being way too good in a crisis. She is always aiming to make a dent in the universe.
